Pharmaceutical Wastewater

Due to the complexity of the pharmaceutical processes and the variety of raw materials, antibiotic wastewater, synthetic drug wastewater, traditional Chinese medicine wastewater and various cleaning wastewater will be produced during their productions.

The wastewater has the following characteristics: the concentration of residual reactants, products, solvents, suspended solids, salts and catalysts in the water is high, the COD concentration may reach hundreds of thousands of mg/l, and the pH has high volatility. In addition, most antibiotics in chemical pharmaceutical wastewater are designed to be highly structurally stable and lipophilic, which will cause serious acute toxicity to life. These are the reasons why it is difficult to purify chemical and pharmaceutical wastewater.

A Pharmaceutical Factory Project in Zhejiang Province

Case Study

Outline of the Facility: 

MBR hollow fiber membrane modules with 700m3/day treatment capacity were put into operation in the wastewater treatment project of a pharmaceutical factory in Zhejiang since 2016. In March 2018, they were transformed into MBR flat membrane modules, which were separated into two membrane tanks: East and West. In March 2018, the first installation of 1200m2 flat sheet membrane modules finished, and in October 2019, the second installation of 1800m2 flat sheet membrane modules were conducted; Totally 10 groups of PE150-200 membrane modules were arranged with a total area of 3000m2.

Performance:
The influent COD concentration of the biochemical tank is 8000-10000mg/l, and the ammonia nitrogen is 200-300mg/l. The sludge concentration of the membrane tank is stable at about 20000mg/l. The effluent COD is less than 500mg/l, and the ammonia nitrogen is less than 35mg/l. The membrane online cleaning cycle is stable at 3 months, and no offline cleaning has been carried out for 3 years.
